Guide:Opens Saturday in Riverside Park with 30-plus vendors, music and more.

SARANAC LAKE — With more music than ever, the Saranac Lake Farmers Market opens for the New season this Saturday in Riverside Park in downtown Saranac Lake.

It will operate through mid October, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine.

“This year we have over 30 vendors including four New vendors that will provide locally roasted coffee, Adirondack furniture, fresh breads and prepared foods,” said volunteer organizer Jake Vennie-Vollrath in a press release.

“Nearly all of our farmers and producers that have helped build the market will return with their quality vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, cheeses, arts, wines, spirits and baked goods.”

Since starting in 2009, the market has grown to be the largest in the Adirondacks.

"Saranac Lake has become a community that, more than ever, supports and values our region's farmers and producers," said Adam Hainer of Juniper Hill Farm, one of the market vendors, in the release.

"The atmosphere of the market every Saturday in Saranac Lake provides an ideal venue, with music, activities and a wide variety of vendors where people can get to know their farmers and producers."

Thanks to a donation from the Adirondack Green Circle, which recently dissolved and gave its assets to other groups, more musicians will be entertaining market shoppers.

Local musician Joe Dockery will be filling the first market with laid-back, toe-tapping tunes, the release said.

“The Farmers Market brings people into the village and draws the Saranac Lake community downtown on Saturday mornings,” said Johnny Muldowney, of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, in the release.

“(It) fills Riverside Park with people, music, and conversation. It has become a way that many residents and visitors begin their weekends here in Saranac Lake and helps draw people into our local businesses.”

The Saranac Lake Farmers Market is part of the Ausable Valley Grange Farmers Markets, the only "producer-only" farmers markets in the eastern Adirondacks.

At "producer-only" markets, the vendors can only sell items that they or their employees produce.

"Producer-only markets not only ensure integrity for the consumer but also provide an environment that encourages local farmers and artisans to expand and diversify their production," the release said.

"Our farmers all follow organic or sustainable production practices."

The Ausable Valley Grange, founded in 1903, was created to bring farm family and businesses out of isolation to collectively negotiate better prices for their products and get the best prices for products and services to run their farms.

There is still space at the Saranac Lake Market for vendors selling locally made products.

The market also has community tent spaces for nonprofits and community organizations.
